Pilosocereus hermii is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet hermii honors the co-discoverer of the species Konrad Herm.
description
Pilosocereus hermii grows columnar with only a few branches and reaches heights of up to 3.6 meters. The woody trunk base is up to 21 centimeters thick. The upright, dull-blunt, pale yellow-green to gray-green shoots , often slightly curved at their base, have a diameter of 7.8 to 10.5 centimeters. The new shoot is frosted light blue-blue-green and sometimes shows banded tires. There are eight to ten (rarely up to eleven) straight, triangular ribs, which are reduced to one to three ribs when they are ripe. The ribs are up to 2.4 inches high and 1.8 to 3.5 inches wide at their base. The furrow between them is straight to slightly undulated. The more of the less round areoles measure 1.8 to 2.8 millimeters in diameter and are 2 to 5.2 millimeters apart. In the flowering area of the shoots they are clearly sunk into the rib, more oval shaped and 2 to 4.3 millimeters long and 1.7 to 2 millimeters wide. The 25 to 40 straight thorns are needle-like, stiff, not flexible and easily brittle. There are five to ten central spines, which are difficult to distinguish from the 20 to 30 to 1 centimeter long radial spines. Occasionally a central spine up to 4.3 centimeters long is formed, which stiffly protrudes horizontally or slightly upwards. The pseudocephalium includes more or less all of the ribs. It consists of ribbons of wool running down the ribs, which consist of up to 4.3 centimeters long, (white to) cream-colored hair .
The flowers , pollinated by bats, open at night. They are up to 5.2 inches long and reach a diameter of up to 3.5 inches. Fruits flat-spherical, 25–28 mm in diameter, olive green to pink, pulp white. Seeds black to dark brown, 1.3 mm long, 0.9 mm wide.
Distribution and systematics
Pilosocereus hermii is distributed in the northwest of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the Serra de São Domingos at altitudes of about 700 meters.
The first description by Pierre Josef Braun , Eddie Esteves Pereira and Andreas Hofacker was published in 2007.
