Pilosocereus occultiflorus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet occultiflorus refers to the "hidden", hardly colored flowers in the wool of the pseudocephalium.

description

Pilosocereus occultiflorus grows tree-like with a woody trunk up to 23 centimeters in diameter, branches from over one meter above the ground, becomes candelabra-like and reaches heights of growth of up to 7 meters. The strong, upright, slightly curved, matt gray-green shoots are up to 3 meters long and have a diameter of 6 to 9.5 centimeters. There are 8 to 9 blunt ribs with a triangular cross-section. The areoles on it are 5 to 9 millimeters apart. The translucent, straight to slightly curved thorns are initially light yellow with a brownish tip, but later gray with a darker tip. The 6 to 13 protruding or downwardly directed central spines are 0.25 to 0.9 inches long. The approximately 20 radial spines are 9 to 11 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is pronounced. The flowering areoles sit on the side of the shoots and include 1 to 3 (or more) adjacent ribs. They are covered with chestnut brown to brownish gray wool.

The flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters long and 2 to 2.5 centimeters in diameter. The flattened, spherical, light pink to greenish fruits have a diameter of 1.9 to 2.4 centimeters, tear at the sides and contain a white pulp.

Distribution and systematics

Pilosocereus occultiflorus is widespread in the western part of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . The first description was published in 1999 by Pierre Josef Braun (* 1959) and Eddie Esteves Pereira (* 1939).
