Pilosocereus pachycladus Bahia 2018

Pilosocereus pachycladus is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet pachycladus means 'with thick branches'. Common names are "Facheiro", "Facheiro Azul" and "Mandacarú de Facho".

Pilosocereus pachycladus usually grows tree-shaped and reaches heights of 2 to 10 meters. The upright, smooth, gray-green to blue-green, glaucous shoots have a diameter of 5.5 to 11 centimeters. There are 5 to 19 ribs, which are furrowed transversely near the shoot tips. The translucent, initially golden yellow thorns turn gray later. The 1 to 12 ascending to protruding central spines are 1 to 30 millimeters long. The 8 to 18 spread radial spines are 5 to 15 millimeters long. The flowering part of the shoots is located near the tip and is little to clearly distinguishable. It includes one to several ribs.

The very variable flowers are 4 to 7 centimeters long and 2.2 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The depressed spherical fruits tear open laterally and contain a magenta colored pulp.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Pilosocereus pachycladus is widespread in the northeast of Brazil . The first description was published in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter . The following subspecies are distinguished:

Pilosocereus pachycladus subsp. pachycladus
Pilosocereus pachycladus subsp. pernambucoensis

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
