Heian Sandan is a kata in Shōtōkan ( karate ) that is learned by the karateka directly after Heian Nidan . Her older name, under which she is also carried in a few other styles, is Pinan Sandan . It essentially consists of changing defense techniques from the lower (Gedan) to the middle (Chudan) level.

The main aim of the kata is to learn how to use the front arm against attacks on the body, especially the correct position of the elbow, always about the width of a fist from the upper body. In addition, mastering the correct stance in Kiba-Dachi and using the body ( Tai Sabaki ) while sliding the feet (Yori-Ashi) at the same time. The kata consists of 20 to 23 movements and the recommended time for performing it is 25 to 40 seconds.
