A benign change in the area of ​​the pineal gland (glandula pinealis) is called a glial pineal cyst or pineal cyst .

Pineal cysts are very common; the vast majority of them are clinically asymptomatic incidental findings that are not considered to be pathological. Large pineal cysts can cause nerve fluid drainage with development of hydrocephalus ; only in isolated cases has a connection been made with the occurrence of sudden deaths.

pathology

Histologically it is a pseudocystic cavity, the wall of which is formed by astrocytes with numerous Rosenthal fibers ; there is no epithelial lining.
