biography

Prehistory, influences

Piney Gir was born in Kansas City and raised in Missouri . Her father, a supporter of the Pentecostal Church (Eng .: Pentecostal movement ), had an aversion to secular things like pop music . She had been taking piano lessons since she was four and was “the little girl with the good voice” in the community (quote from an interview). After her parents divorced in 1989 and she and her mother moved away, a new life began for Piney Gir. So it is no wonder that church music influenced her less than her favorite bands Depeche Mode , Erasure and The Cure . From 1992 to 1998 she studied classical music as well as visual arts and took some courses on contemporary music. Then she moved to London . In 1999 she completed courses in fashion, film and metalworking at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design . Since then she has been working for the label Mute Records .

Vic Twenty

As a singer and keyboard player she supported Adrian Morris , who performed under the name Vic Twenty . The name alludes to the Commodore VC 20 computer and underlines the musical style of this formation: Synth-Pop . After only one single released on Mute Records, Piney Gir left Vic Twenty in 2003.

The Schla La Las, Solo

Since then she has been a member of the women's band The Schla La Las on the one hand, but also works as a soloist and appears in the opening act for Erasure. In July 2004 the solo debut album Peakahokahoo was released on the Truck Records label . Her Cockney accent is striking, as is the ironic , humorous style of many pieces. This is especially true for the title KISSING and for the duet with Simple Kid sung Night Song . Apart from Que Sera Sera (originally by Doris Day ) and an idiosyncratic megaphone- distorted version of the Who classic My Generation , the album contains original compositions. The guest musicians are the longtime background singers of Erasure -  Val (erie) Chalmers and Ann-Marie Gilkes  - who Piney Gir met during her time with Vic Twenty. For the second album Hold yer horses (2006) several pieces of the debut were recorded again.

The stage name Piney Gir comes from her childhood. If you asked her for her name, the answer was: "I'm Piney and I'm a gir (l)". The album title Peakahokahoo , which describes a fantasy bird , has a similar origin .
