Pink Palace (dt. 'Pink Palace') was the name of a property in Los Angeles , located on Sunset Boulevard in the upscale Holmby Hills district . The villa became famous for its numerous prominent residents, including actress Jayne Mansfield , who gave the property its nickname Pink Palace . The house was demolished in 2002.

history

The villa was built in 1929 at 10100 Sunset Boulevard in a Mediterranean style, the architect was GC McAllister. The house had 40 rooms on over 900 m², including seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a bar, a library and a wine cellar. A separate guest house was also on the property. The first owner was the entertainer Rudy Vallée .

After him, the actress and " bombshell " Jayne Mansfield bought the villa together with her future second husband Mickey Hargitay in 1957 for $ 76,000. Mansfield had extensive renovations carried out: she had the house painted pink and a heart-shaped bathtub installed in one of the bathrooms, as well as completely lining the entire room with pink faux fur. She also built in a heart-shaped fireplace and had a wrought-iron gate with the initials J and M attached to the driveway . She also built a fountain through which pink champagne was pumped during celebrations. The swimming pool that Hargitay designed for Mansfield attracted particular attention : it was a heart-shaped pool on the bottom of which Hargitay had I love you Jaynie written in gold mosaic . The property has been a favorite haunt of Hollywood - prominence and was considered a landmark of Hollywood. It was also discussed in the tabloids, for example in a photo series in Life Magazine in 1960.

After Mansfield's death in 1967, the property changed hands several times: Ringo Starr , Mama Cass Elliot and, most recently, Engelbert Humperdinck lived in the villa. Starr is said to have tried several times in vain to paint over the pink walls white, but the old paint kept shining through. Humperdinck sold the entire property to a speculative firm that had it demolished on November 9, 2002.

Quotes

“Jayne's Pink Palace became a central topic of conversation in Hollywood. [...] Show people from near and far were jealous of the royal booty. "There were terraces, flowers, statues like in ancient Rome and a wonderful little glass bathhouse," Mickey [Hargitay] said proudly. "The house had character" "
