Pinkernelle is a German surname that is documented as far back as the 14th century and was relatively common in the Middle Ages. The name is made up of the Middle High German word for nail (Neil) and the onomatopoeic verb 'pink' or 'pinkern', which means 'to hit, hammer'. This means that the family name Pinkernelle can be interpreted as a job title for a nail smith. Another source gives the name as a possible abbreviation of the name Pink Cornelius (blacksmith Cornelius). There are also other spellings of the name, for example Pinkernell or Pinkerneil.

There are 133 entries with the name Pinkernelle in Deutsche Telekom's online telephone directory, over half (69) of which are in the Braunschweig / Magdeburg area. The remaining entries are mainly distributed over the northern half of Germany, only 15 can be found in southern Germany. It can therefore be assumed that the name found its origin in the Braunschweig / Magdeburg region. This can be confirmed by the fact that many families from the Braunschweig / Magdeburg area have relatives in other areas of the German federal government.
