Pinnawala (also Pinnawela ) is a place in Sri Lanka in the province of Sabaragamuwa near the city of Kegalle .
The place is known for an elephant orphanage ( Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage ), where orphaned or wounded elephants are cared for in natural surroundings. The herd is widely delimited, which gives the impression that the elephants live in the wild. Every day at 11:00 a.m. the elephants are led to a neighboring river to water them. At the same time, the orphanage is a tourist attraction, as you can also ride the elephant there. The elephants have no tusks except for an old bull.
