The Kegalle district ( Sinhala කෑගල්ල දිස්ත්‍රික්කය Kǣgalla distrikkaya ; Tamil கேகாலை மாவட்டம் Kēkālai māvaṭṭam ) is a district in the Sabaragamuwa Province in Sri Lanka . The main town is Kegalle .

geography

The district of Kegalle is located in the southern interior of the island and belongs to the province of Sabaragamuwa . Neighboring districts are Kurunegala in the north, Kandy in the east, Nuwara Eliya in the southeast, Ratnapura in the south and Colombo and Gampaha in the west.

The Kegalle district has an area of ​​1,693 square kilometers (of which 1,685 square kilometers are land and 8 square kilometers are inland water). This makes it the eighth smallest district in Sri Lanka in terms of area.

According to the 2012 census, the Kegalle district has 840,648 inhabitants. With 499 inhabitants per square kilometer, the population density is well above the Sri Lankan average (325 inhabitants per square kilometer). Of the residents, 400,820 (47.68%) were male and 439,828 (52.32%) were female. The population is very young. This is illustrated by a look at the age distribution.

District population by ethnic group

Although almost 85% of the population are Sinhalese, there are significant other ethnic groups. In the Deraniyagala, Mawanella and Yatiyanthota divisions, more than twenty percent of the residents are members of an ethnic minority.

Population of the district by confession

Almost all Sinhalese residents of Kegalle follow Buddhism , while the Moors and Malays are all Islamic . The second strongest religion is Hinduism , to which the vast majority of Indian and Sri Lankan Tamils ​​belong. The Christianity , the (about 8,000 people) (about 7,000 people) who are Burgher, a small minority of Sinhalese and the minority Tamils, is only a small minority religion. It is worth mentioning the growth of the Protestants (mostly Free Churches; 1981-2012: + 98%) with, at the same time, low growth among Catholics (1981-2012: + 4.8%).

Population development

The population of the Kegalle district has been growing steadily for decades. In the period from 2001 to 2012 (the last two census years) the increase was 55,124 people. This is a growth of 7.02%. Since 1946 the population has more than doubled (+ 109%).

The district was not a combat zone in the civil war. Therefore, only a small part of the migrants belong to the group affected by the civil war. In 2012, according to government statistics, there were only 1,493 refugees and returnees in the Kegalle district. Among them were 1,151 refugees from other areas of Sri Lanka and 342 people were resettled after previous displacement.

Significant places

The only large town in the district is Kegalle (2012: 15,993 inhabitants).

Local administration

The head of the district holds the title of District Secretary. The district is further divided into eleven divisions (under a Division Secretary). The cities and larger towns have their own administration (municipal parliament or council). There are 573 village administrations (Grama Niladharis) for the 1,677 villages in the entire district.
