The Moneragala district ( Sinhala : මොනරාගල දිස්ත්රික්කය ; Mŏṇarāgala distrikkaya , Tamil : மொணராகலை மாவட்டம் ; Mŏṉarākalai Māvaṭṭam ) is a district in the Uva Province in Sri Lanka . The main town is the eponymous city of Moneragala .
geography
The district of Moneragala is located in the southeastern interior of Sri Lanka and belongs to the province of Uva in Sri Lanka . Neighboring districts are Ampara in the north and east, Hambantota in the south, Ratnapura in the south-west and Badulla in the west and north-west.
The Moneragala District covers an area of 5,639 square kilometers (of which 5,508 square kilometers are land and 131 square kilometers are inland water). This makes it the second largest district in Sri Lanka in terms of area.
population
According to the 2012 census, the Moneragala district has 451,058 inhabitants. With only 82 inhabitants per square kilometer, the population density is well below the Sri Lankan average (325 inhabitants per square kilometer). Of the residents, 224,168 (49.70%) were male and 226,890 (50.30%) were female. The population is very young. This is illustrated by a look at the age distribution.

Population of the district by confession
Almost all Sinhalese residents of Moneragala are Buddhist , while the Moors and Malays are all Islamic . The second strongest religion is Hinduism , to which the vast majority of Indian and Sri Lankan Tamils belong. The Christianity , the one minority Tamil and Burgher belong is only a small minority religion.

Population development
The population of the Moneragala district has been growing faster than the country as a whole for decades. In the period from 2001 to 2012 (the last two census years) the increase was 53,683 people. This is a growth of 13.51%. Since 1963 the population has more than tripled (+ 241%).
The district was not a combat zone in the civil war. Therefore, only a small part of the migrants belong to the group affected by the civil war. In 2012, according to government statistics, there were only 2,290 refugees and returnees living in the Moneragale district. These included 1,584 refugees from other areas of Sri Lanka and 706 people were resettled after being displaced.
Significant places
The only large towns in the district are Moneragala and Wattegama (2012: 8,157 inhabitants).

Local administration
The head of the district holds the title of District Secretary. The district is further divided into eleven divisions (under a Division Secretary). The cities and larger towns have their own administration (municipal parliament or council). There are 319 village administrations (Grama Niladharis) for the 1,324 villages in the entire district.
