The district of Badulla ( Sinhala බදුල්ල පරිපාලන දිස්ත්‍රික්කය badūlla paripālana distrikkaya ; Tamil பதுளை மாவட்டம் Patuḷai māvaṭṭam ) is a district in the province of Uva in Sri Lanka . The main town is Badulla .

The Badulla District is located in the southern interior of Sri Lanka and belongs to the Uva Province in Sri Lanka . Neighboring districts are Ampara in the north and northeast, Moneragala in the east and south, Ratnapura in the southwest, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy in the west and Matale in the northwest.

The Badulla district has an area of ​​2,861 square kilometers (of which 2,827 square kilometers are land and 34 square kilometers are inland water). This makes it the eighth largest district in Sri Lanka in terms of area.

District population by ethnic group

Sinhalese

The vast majority of the residents of Badulla District are Sinhalese . They make up the majority of the population in all DS divisions with the exception of Lunugala (41.41%). In the DS divisions Haldummulla (51.75%), Haputale (53.83%) and Passara (55.94%), however, only with narrow majorities. Their share ranges between 41.41% in Lunugala and 99.57% in Rideemaliyadda.

Indian Tamils

Tamils ​​who immigrated from India during the colonial period form the second largest group of the population. In the DS Division Lunugala they make up a narrow majority of the population with 52.08%. Moors

Population of the district by confession

Almost all Sinhalese residents of Anuradhapura are Buddhist , while the Moors and Malays are all Islamic . Local administration

The head of the district holds the title of District Secretary. The district is further divided into fifteen divisions (under a Division Secretary).
