The district of Badulla ( Sinhala බදුල්ල පරිපාලන දිස්ත්රික්කය badūlla paripālana distrikkaya ; Tamil பதுளை மாவட்டம் Patuḷai māvaṭṭam ) is a district in the province of Uva in Sri Lanka . The main town is Badulla .
geography
The Badulla District is located in the southern interior of Sri Lanka and belongs to the Uva Province in Sri Lanka . Neighboring districts are Ampara in the north and northeast, Moneragala in the east and south, Ratnapura in the southwest, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy in the west and Matale in the northwest.
The Badulla district has an area of 2,861 square kilometers (of which 2,827 square kilometers are land and 34 square kilometers are inland water). This makes it the eighth largest district in Sri Lanka in terms of area.
population
According to the 2012 census, the Badulla district has 815,405 inhabitants. With 288 inhabitants per square kilometer, the population density is just below the Sri Lankan average (325 inhabitants per square kilometer). Of the residents, 391,948 (48.07%) were male and 423,457 (51.93%) were female. The population is very young. This is illustrated by a look at the age distribution.

District population by ethnic group
- Sinhalese
The vast majority of the residents of Badulla District are Sinhalese . They make up the majority of the population in all DS divisions with the exception of Lunugala (41.41%). In the DS divisions Haldummulla (51.75%), Haputale (53.83%) and Passara (55.94%), however, only with narrow majorities. Their share ranges between 41.41% in Lunugala and 99.57% in Rideemaliyadda.
- Indian Tamils
Tamils who immigrated from India during the colonial period form the second largest group of the population. In the DS Division Lunugala they make up a narrow majority of the population with 52.08%. In Haldummulla (41.37%), Passara (37.11%), Haputale (34.85%), Hali Ela (27.88%) and Ella (26.53%) more than 25% of the population belong to theirs Ethnic group. Their share ranges between 0.09% in Rideemaliyadda and 52.08% in Lunugala.
- Moors
A smaller minority are the Moors or Tamil-speaking Muslims. In the DS divisions Welimada (16.60%) and Badulla (9.37%) they represent the highest proportions of their ethnic group. Their share ranges between 0.03% in Rideemaliyadda and 16.60% in Welimada.
- Sri Lankan Tamils
Sri Lankan Tamils are only a small minority. Their share ranges between 0.23% in Mahiyanganaya and 6.32% in Bandarawela.

Population of the district by confession
Almost all Sinhalese residents of Anuradhapura are Buddhist , while the Moors and Malays are all Islamic . The second strongest religion is Hinduism , to which the vast majority of Indian and Sri Lankan Tamils belong. The Christianity , the one minority Tamil and Burgher belong is only a small minority religion.

Local administration
The head of the district holds the title of District Secretary. The district is further divided into fifteen divisions (under a Division Secretary). The cities and larger towns have their own administration (municipal parliament or council). There are 567 village administrations (Grama Niladharis) for the 1,991 villages in the entire district.
