Piona nodata is a species of mite in the Pionidae family.

features

The males are 0.8 millimeters tall, the females reach up to 2 millimeters. The egg-shaped body is colored red. There are webbed hairs on the legs. There is no rostrum . On both sides of the genital opening there are 8 to 13 genital cups in females and 8 to 12 genital cups in males.

Occurrence

The species occurs in stagnant bodies of water and is particularly common in small bodies of water. Their distribution area includes Europe as well as Asia and North America.

Way of life

Piona nodata lives predatory. During copulation, the male transfers his sperm from his seed pouch into the sexual opening of the female using the third pair of legs.
