Pioneer One is an American science fiction series from independent production. It is distributed free of charge and exclusively via the Internet. The main distribution channel is the BitTorrent network, the series is offered on many larger BitTorrent portals, but an online stream has also been set up in the meantime .

The story begins on the day of the crash of a manned Soviet space capsule near Edmonton . US investigators are being pressured by senior officials and politicians to call the incident an act of terrorism. However, they quickly suspect a different explanation: the surviving occupant of the capsule, an unknown Russian, could be a participant in a Soviet expedition to Mars in the 1980s.

The series is produced by Josh Bernhard and Bracey Smith, who previously produced the film The Lionshare , which was also distributed for free via BitTorrent.
The pilot was released in June 2010. It was produced on a budget of $ 7,500 raised through the crowdfunding website kickstarter.com . Other episodes of Pioneer One were funded by audience donations.
Filming took place in Binghamton , among other places .
On December 13, 2011, the sixth and final episode of the first season was released. By the end of the season, over $ 87,000 in donations had been collected via the VODO portal. If you look at the calculation used by the makers, "Pioneer One" ended up in the profit zone. According to the makers, the surplus should go into the production of a new season.
By early July 2010, the pilot had been downloaded over a million times via BitTorrent. In addition, there are over 300,000 downloads of the high-resolution version. The series was named Best Drama Pilot Episode at the New York Television Festival .
