Piophila casei is a fly from the family of the cheese fly (Piophilidae), which is distributed worldwide. Like the other species in this family, the larvae of this species are partiallyresistantto gastric acid and can enter the human digestive tract through food andcause myiasis there. Nevertheless, casu marzu , a sheep's cheese from Sardinia, is refined by the fact that the larvae develop in it.

features

The animals are three to four millimeters long. The head, meso notum , scutellum and abdomen are black, the face, the forehead in the front third and the legs are colored yellow. However, the rails ( tibia ) and thighs ( femora ) of the front and rear pairs of legs are predominantly black. The mesonotum has three rows of small bristles that are widely spaced and has an oily sheen.

The larvae have a white to yellowish white, 9 to 10 millimeter long and about one millimeter thick, cylindrical body, tapering towards the front and towards the rear. The thickest area is between the seventh and eighth body segments. The chitinized mouthparts are black.

Way of life

The females lay their cylindrical-oval eggs on preserved fish, ham and cheese, on which the larvae feed. The larvae hatch after a day or two. They need about two weeks until pupation, the pupil rest is about 12 days. Pupation takes place away from the food. The adults live for about 4 to 10 days, mating takes place on the third or fourth day. The larvae can jump 10 to 15 centimeters wide and high by quickly bending in and stretching out the body again.
