Delal ( Kurdish پردی دەلال Pira Delal , German for: "Beautiful Bridge", possibly in the sense of "Uniqueness") is one of the oldest bridges in the city of Zaxo in the autonomous region of Kurdistan in Iraq . According to oral tradition, Pira Delal is said to come from Roman antiquity . It crosses the Chabur River in the southeast of the city. It is 114 meters long and 4.70 meters wide and crosses the river over six arches, the large central arch at a height of 15.5 meters. Reliefs and inscriptions on the walls, which originally provided information about the construction and the history of the building, are missing and can no longer be reconstructed. For the Department of Antiquities in Dohuk , the bridge is one of the most important of 159 archaeological sites in Zakho. The Kurdistan government has been restoring parts of the bridge since 2013.

history

Bridge, 2010

The Delal Bridge is believed to have been built in Roman times. Several Iraqi archaeologists have attributed the construction to Slatna Bahdinan . What is certain, however, is that this bridge is one of the oldest monuments in the region, the name goes back to pre-Kurdish times. Slatna Albhdinyin may have restored them.

In 1833, the Ottomans destroyed the upper part of the bridge to protect their rule from enemies. Under British occupation in 1955, after the Ottoman forces left the city, the large central arch was blown up.

In 1969 the bridge was badly damaged by a flood.
