The Pirolatal is a dune area on the North Sea island of Langeoog .

It is named after the protected plant Pirola ( Pyrola rotundifolia ), which has become rare after the Pirola Valley has been drained. Instead, a dry crowberry heather can be found here.

It is located in the western part of the island northeast of the inhabited area of Langeoog. The Pirolaweg leads from west to east through the Pirolatal, which is around two kilometers long and 100 to 200 meters wide. This ends - like the area itself - west of the Schloppsee . In the north of the Oriola valley, a high chain of dunes forms the natural boundary to the beach in front of it. These protective dunes have often been significantly affected by past storm surges, so that they are the subject of current coastal protection measures. In this context, the protective dunes were artificially strengthened in 2007 by backfilling sand in connection with beach grass plantings to stabilize them in 2009. This also led to the relocation of a section of the Oriole Trail. The cost of this measure, in which 120,000 cubic meters of sand were built, amounted to 600,000 euros in 2007 and a further 760,000 euros in the following year, in which the dune was reinforced again.

In 2010 and 2013, additional storm surge protection was provided on the lake side in front of the protective dunes with sand pre-washings of the order of magnitude of 450,000 and 500,000 cubic meters, respectively.
