The German translation of the Bible by Johannes Piscator from the years 1602 to 1604 is called the Piscator Bible .

background

The German Calvinists originally used the Luther Bible , which was provided with additional explanations or additions. Thus in 1568 the Heidelberg Bible was created, 1571–1591 the Neustadt Bibles, 1589–1591 the Dresden Bible, 1595 the Herborn Bible and 1601 the Kassel Luther Bible. The theological contrast between Lutherans and Calvinists, however, required a complete translation of the Bible in a Calvinist sense. Amandus Polanus von Polansdorf submitted the first Calvinist translation of the Bible in Geneva in 1603 . This was based on the Luther Bible, but Polanus adapted many formulations in the Calvinist sense. This translation caused great indignation among the Lutherans. Against this background, Johannes Piscator decided to produce the first independent Calvinist translation of the Bible.

The translation

Piscator had written a commentary on the New Testament from 1589 to 1597 and a commentary on the Old Testament since 1601 . He used this preliminary work to translate the Bible from 1602 to 1604. The Latin and French translations made by his fellow believers in Geneva were important sources for him. But also formulations of the Luther Bible were adopted in many passages of the text.

When translating, he paid attention to philological accuracy. This makes the text linguistically sometimes bumpy. The text is also characterized by the use of Upper German word forms.

The addition of the affirming oath “God strafe me” in Mk 8.12  EU , which follows its factually correct actual translation and is identified by smaller printing , was used by the Lutheran opponents of the Bible translation to classify the Bible as the “punishing me God Bible” describe.

The importance of translation

The Piscator Bible was used in Herborn until 1652. Further editions were later used in Germany. Its use in the canton of Bern as the official state Bible from 1684 to the end of the 18th century is what makes this translation of the Bible so important.
