Ulrich Bister (born June 5, 1948 in Bedburg-Hau ; † June 11, 2008 in Herborn ) was a German theologian , church historian and publisher.

Life

Bister grew up in Bedburg-Hau . After graduating from high school (1968 in Kleve ) he studied Protestant theology , geography , pedagogy and oriental languages in Giessen until 1972 and then entered the Hessian school service. Until 1974 he also studied Protestant theology in Marburg . During this time he began to build up an extensive private archive on the history of the Free Church , especially the Brethren movement . In 1983 he did his doctorate under Erich Geldbach in Marburg on the history of the German Brethren movement from its beginnings to the ban in 1937 . In 1996 he was given leave of absence from school and from then on devoted himself full-time to his research on church history and the Sepher publishing house which he founded . His biggest projects included the co-editing of Gerhard Tersteegen's letters (published in 2008) and a facsimile edition of Johannes Piscator's translation of the Bible (eight volumes from 2003 to 2014) (not completed during his lifetime, but continued posthumously by his son Jean Bister ). At times he also held teaching positions at the Free Theological Academy in Giessen , the Wiedenest Bible School and the Evangelical Theological Faculty in Löwen ; at the latter he was visiting professor.

Bister was married and had four children. He lived in Herborn-Hörbach since 1977 .
