A stamping mill ( Latin : pistrinum ) is a grain mill with a stamping mechanism in which the ground product was stamped into hollow blocks or mortars . It represents the preliminary stage of the grinding mill . In archeology , pistrinum is usually translated with both mill and bakery .

There are also paper and oil mills with pounding technology.
