Pitatus is an impact crater in the southwest of the front of the moon , on the southern edge of the Mare Nubium . Immediately to the west is the smaller Hesiodus crater (moon crater) .

The rim of the crater is heavily eroded, the interior is flooded by lava and is level, except for the grooves of the Rimae Pitatus that run concentrically along the rim .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian astronomer and mathematician Pietro Pitati .
