history

In 1599 the property belonged to Patrick Guthrie . The dowry went to David Ogilvy , Lord Ogilvy's second son . Records report that in 1730 his legacy "built himself a beautiful new house in Pitmuies". Due to marriage and inheritance, Pitmuies changed hands twice in the following years. The Carnegy legacy left the country and died penniless. After his death, Robert Pierson bought the property in 1760, but he died three years later. The sundial bears his initials. In 1768 James Mudie acquired Pitmuies. He had various outbuildings laid out and probably laid the foundations for the surrounding parks and gardens, which his heirs developed over a century. Mudie had the general population banned from using the west gate and the path along the manor house and had a new road built farther from Pitmuies House. Around 1770 Pitmuis House was redesigned.

In 1876 the Mudies sold the property to Leonard Lyell , who would later become the first Baron Lyell . However, Lyell stayed at his villa in Kirriemuir and leased the property to various people until a Major Crombie bought it in 1919. Crombie plays an important part in the development of the parks and gardens. In 1945 Crombies' son Pitmuies sold to Douglas Ogilvie , in whose family it has been inherited ever since.
