Pizza Hawaii is a variant of the pizza that consists of the basic dough with tomato sauce , ham , pineapple and cheese .

Pizza Hawaii was invented in 1962 in Chatham ( Ontario , Canada ) by restaurateur Sam Panopoulos (1934-2017). According to a 1999 survey, it is the most popular type of pizza in Australia , with a market share of 15 percent of all pizza sold.

It got its name from the garnish "à la Hawaii", which is characterized by the addition of pineapple. The Hawaii archipelago is considered to be one of the best growing areas for pineapples.

Similar to the Hawaiian pizza, the Hawaiian toast created by TV chef Clemens Wilmenrod , known in Germany as early as the 1950s, is prepared.
