history

The Kloppot Pond was located in the area of Krakauer Platz until the 19th century. After it was drained, the Rossmarkt (horse market) took place on the site. Later the area was named Krakauer Platz, as the square was in the east of the city, i.e. towards the city of Krakow.

In the 1920s, the square was already being used in many ways as an event location. The largest horse market in Upper Silesia was held here every month, various assemblies and proclamations were held and the square was also used as a fairground, where a roller coaster was one of the attractions. With the increasing housing shortage in Gliwice, barracks were built on Krakauer Platz. In the meantime, Roma were also settled on the square. There was a sports field to the southeast of the square.

Krakauer Platz was one of the squares and streets in Gleiwitz that were not given a completely new name from 1945. The name of the square, which was named after the Polish city of Krakow , was merely translated into Polish.

From 1945 the Technical University was built on part of the square, which made the square smaller.
