Planck Point got its name from a geological expedition from the University of Minnesota , which explored the area in the summer of 1963/64. They named the survey after Russell E. Planck, the "crew chief" of a helicopter of the 62nd Transportation Detachment of the United States Army , who had helped the expedition.
