The Merseburg Planetarium is located in the center of a 26 m diameter circular building on the Vorderen Gotthardteich in the city of Merseburg .

history

The Merseburg Planetarium was opened on October 7, 1969. Up until the fall of the Wall there was a Kosmos ice bar in the outer ring of the building, and since 1992 it has been used as an Asian restaurant. The planetarium is a place for astronomical school and popular education. While the astronomy school lessons ran continuously, no more offers were made to the public for a longer period of time.

On December 5, 2008, operations for the public were resumed and, in addition to school lessons, regular public starry sky demonstrations, lectures and cultural offers take place again. The planetarium is operated by the city of Merseburg. The astronomical work is carried out by the association "Sternfreunde Planetarium Merseburg eV". The facility was structurally modernized in 2012. Since the installation of a fulldome system in 2016, the Merseburg Planetarium has been given the subtitles "Live Planetarium, Science Theater, Creative Room" in order to make the interdisciplinary spectrum on offer visible.

Technical Equipment

The planetarium has a dome diameter of 8 m with space for 50 seats. The stars are projected by a modernized ZEISS ZKP-1 projector, which enables a realistic representation of the northern starry sky in the past, present and future. ZEISS special projectors for the solar system, satellites and constellations are also integrated. Lighting, audio and video technology complement the equipment. In August 2016, a fulldome system for digital dynamic full-dome projection was installed. For this, the traditionally centrally arranged control console of the star projector was moved to the side of the hall.

In the vicinity of the planetarium, a walkable horizontal sundial, an equatorial sundial and a suevite (impact rock from the Nördlinger Ries ) are integrated into the green area of the front Gotthard pond.
