A plantation house is a specific form of two-story building that originated mainly in the New Orleans region during the 19th century. Similar to the Shotgun House , its origin goes back to the refugees from Saint Domingue - today's Haiti , who left Haiti as a result of the slave rebellion from 1791 and settled in the southern states .

Typical features of the Plantation House are the brick pillars that form the foundation. It reduced the risk of the house being damaged in the event of flooding and made it easier to cool, as the higher construction made the rooms more windy. A covered veranda was an important part of this type of house. This veranda facing the street was not only the entrance to the house, but part of the life of the residents took place on it.
