Plantation House was built by the East India Company between 1791 and 1792 as the governor's summer residence. The company ran the island until the formal posting of a governor in 1834, when the island became a crown colony on April 22, 1834 .

The house was extensively expanded in 1816 and 1960. Plantation House is a listed building of category 1 under monument protection .

Turtles

Jonathan , the oldest resident of the island and probably the oldest reptile on earth, lives in the garden of Plantation House . Some sources, however, even speak of the oldest living land animal on earth. His age is estimated at 176 years (as of 2008). At least four other turtles live in the garden. A fifth died on July 5, 2016, aged about 70.
