Jonathan (in 1886)

Jonathan (* around 1832 in the Seychelles ) is a Seychelles giant tortoise ( Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa ) that lives in the garden of the Plantation House on the Atlantic island of St. Helena . She is considered to be the oldest inhabitant of the island and probably the oldest living reptile on earth. Some sources even speak of the oldest living land animal on earth. His age was estimated to be 187 years at the beginning of 2019.

Jonathan was brought to the British Crown Colony from the Seychelles in 1882 at the age of about 50 . There it was named in the 1930s by Governor Stewart Spencer Davis . Jonathan is owned by the Government of St. Helena.

Its age is based on the fact that Jonathan was fully grown on the crossing to St. Helena in 1882. This is proven by photos from 1886. This means that his minimum age was set at 50 at that time.

The state of the turtle was described in December 2015 as "alive and well" (German: alive and well ). However, in addition to his sense of smell, Jonathan has also lost his eyesight, but he can hear very well.

The obverse of the St. Helenas 5 pence coin features an image of Jonathan.
