Plas Machynlleth is a country house in Machynlleth Market in the former Welsh county of Montgomeryshire , now part of Powys . It was the Welsh residence of the Marquesses of Londonderry . It came into the family through the marriage of George Vane-Tempest , Viscount Seaham (and later Earl Vane and 5th Marquess of Londonderry), to Mary Cornelia Edwards , whose father, Sir John Edwards, 1st Baronet of Garth , had the house expanded and renamed. history

The house was the 5th Marquess' family home. His eldest son, Charles Vane-Tempest, 6th Marquess of Londonderry , left Plas Machynlleth to succeed his father, but his youngest son, Lord Herbert Vane-Tempest , continued to live in the country house until he passed on January 26th Was killed in the 1921 railway accident at Abermule .

The oldest parts of the house date from the 17th century. The entrance facade was added in 1853. For many years the country house was called Greenfields . It was later renamed after the town in which it stands.

The 7th Marquess of Londonderry bequeathed the house and property to Machynlleth Market, which used it for administrative offices. In 1995 the building became the Celtica Heritage Center after a £ 3 million renovation paid for by the Montgomeryshire County Council and the EU. For several years the center successfully attracted tourists, as well as educational visitors and conferences. Then it was taken over by the new Powys county government. In 2006 it was closed due to low investment by the administration and falling visitor numbers; in 1998-2006 it had made a loss of £ 1.1 million. The country house now serves as a venue for communal purposes and meetings.
