Plastiscope
A plastiskcope (legally protected term), sometimes also plastiskop , is a small image viewer without its own light source (in contrast to a peepee ). They were patented in Germany from 1953.
nature
It has mostly the visual appearance of a toy television (there were also models in other shapes, such as farmhouses or cameras) and consists of a plastic housing (a common format was 7 × 5.5 × 2.5 centimeters), including some of these different dimensions were common. The "focusing screen" usually shows a striking motif of the respective holiday region (e.g. Cologne Cathedral , Heidelberg Castle or the Loreley ). Inside there is a disc with light images (small slides ) that can be viewed against the light through a lens that enlarges the image . Therefore, there is also a small window for the incidence of light on the side facing away from the viewer. By clicking a simple mechanism, the wheel with the photos is moved one position further, with the viewer now opening up a new image in the viewfinder.
The individual images are often blurred (due to the limited sharpness of the plastic lens) or their colors are clearly over-colored. Their number is between 8 and (mostly) 16 images per device.
distribution
A plastiscope was a popular souvenir from family members from their respective holiday region from the late 1950s until the early 1980s . Plastiscopes can still be found in some souvenir shops today. The pictures show sights of the respective region and have names such as: "Greetings from the Drachenfels" , "Holiday greetings from Willingen" , "The beautiful Moselle " or "Remembering Bad Driburg " .
Today plastiskopes have cult status and are occasionally coveted collector's items that can fetch high prices at auctions.
