¡Democracia Real YA! ( Spanish for Real Democracy Now! ) is a grassroots movement that is considered to be the initiator of the protests in Spain 2011/2012 . It is a social movement that defines itself as non-partisan, non-union, peaceful, non-ideological, but not apolitical .

Emergence

The movement arose in the first few months of 2011 on the Internet , especially in social networks , and emerged from a merger of around 200 smaller groups in January 2011.

Since its inception, the movement has organized itself mainly through three groups that are particularly affected: the unemployed , displaced people who were unable to pay the mortgage installments , and young people who consider themselves "the precarious youth" describe. In March 2011, the platform published a manifesto summarizing its position and goals.

aims

In addition to democracy , the movement advocates equality , freedom and sustainability , among other things , and criticizes the Spanish government and the economic system of Spain. She was one of the organizations that called for the protests on May 15, 2011 and she supports the acampadas (camps) that resulted from it , although she did not call for them.

She is of the opinion that the citizens are neither represented nor heard by the current politicians and she calls for a change of course in social policy and in the economy , which in the context of the economic crisis of 2008-2011 led many people into unemployment or precariousness. In addition, it indicts the practices of the big corporations and drafts a series of demands.

Demonstrations initiated by the platform

Influenced by the Manifesto Outraged! by Stéphane Hessel and the book Reacciona (React) by Rosa María Artal called the movement in 50 Spanish cities for demonstrations on May 15, 2011. She called for a renewal of the democratic process and denounced political corruption and neoliberal politics .

On May 15, Spanish civil society protested against politicians and the economic system in more than 50 cities. The model was the riots in Greece in 2008 , the revolutions and protests in the context of the Arab Spring and the protests triggered by the Icelandic financial crisis , which led to legal action against allegedly responsible bankers. Without any advertising support - neither from parties nor from trade unions - tens of thousands of citizens demonstrated peacefully under the motto “Real Democracy Now! We are not a commodity in the hands of politicians and bankers ”.
