The plate pepper shell ( Abra tenuis ) is a shellfish species from the family of pepper shells (Semelidae). It also occurs in the North Sea .

features

The clearly flattened (name!), Single-sided housing is up to 13 millimeters long. It is rounded-triangular in outline and has a width / height ratio of 1.1 to 1.2. It is only slightly unequal as the vertebrae are only slightly behind the center line (in relation to the length of the case). The posterior and anterior dorsal margins are almost straight, about the same length, and also drop at about the same angles to the front and rear ends. The rear edge is somewhat trimmed. The ventral margin is strongly rounded.

The ligament is both external and internal. The small, brown external ligament is behind the vertebrae. The internal ligament sits in a small, spoon-shaped chondrophore . The lock has a small cardinal tooth in the left flap and a very weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth. In the right valve there are two cardinal teeth and a weak anterior and posterior lateral tooth. The posterior cardinal tooth is significantly larger than the anterior cardinal tooth. There are two sphincters. The mantle bay is very deep, the ventral part of the indentation is fused with the outer mantle attachment line.

The whitish shell is thin-walled and fragile. There are fine concentric lines on the surface. The periostracum is a very thin, light brown coating. The inner edge of the case is smooth.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The plate pepper mussel has a distribution area that extends from the southern North Sea , through the English Channel , along the coasts of the Eastern Atlantic to Mauritania . It is also found in the Mediterranean .

It lives in muddy sand in coastal areas and estuaries , in areas with reduced salinity.

Taxonomy

The species was first described in 1803 by George Montagu under the binomial Mactra tenuis . It is the type species of the genus Abra Lamarck, 1818.
