The Compass Rose Square is a square in the forum of the ancient city of Thugga . It is located between the market square in the south and the Temple of Mercury in the north. The square was laid out in the reign of Commodus . A twelve-pointed compass rose with a diameter of eight meters is carved on the limestone floor of the square . The names of the winds can be read in the spikes, Septentrio in the north, Auster in the south, Faonius in the west and Volturnus in the east. The place got its name after this compass rose. At the end of the square there was a speaker's platform.
