Playa Girón is a small place on the south coast of Cuba in the Bay of Pigs . It originated in earlier centuries as a fishing village.
History and brief description
The village bordering the beach (Spanish playa ) was named after the French pirate Gilberto Giron , who presumably conquered the area around 1605.
Cubans in exile, equipped and supported by the USA , landed near Playa Girón in April 1961 during their Bay of Pigs invasion . Some pieces of equipment and extensive information about the fight are on display in the Playa Girón Museum. Playa Girón has a small aircraft landing strip.
In the 1970s, the Cuban government organized a worldwide architectural competition for residential and commercial buildings in the town. Among others, the German architect Dieter Bankert participated with designs.
Playa Girón in music
The Cuban songwriter Silvio Rodríguez composed a track called Playa Girón , dedicated to the fishermen of a boat of the same name from 1969 to 1970. It appeared on his album Días y Flores 1975. His title Preludio Girón deals with the invasion of the Bay of Pigs .
