Plaza Cánovas del Castillo is a square in Madrid ( Spain ).

The square is surrounded by several important buildings such as the classical "Palacio de Villahermosa" from 1806, which houses the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the elegant Hotel Palace , which King Alfonso XIII. Was built in 1912 in order to be able to provide a representative hostel for its guests. The Museo del Prado is a bit offset .

The Fuente de Neptuno (Neptune Fountain) made of marble, which represents the sea god Neptunus , is located on a traffic island . He stands on a mussel cart pulled by seahorses with fish tails. Neptune is shown with a snake around the right hand and a trident in the left. The fountain was designed by Ventura Rodríguez in 1782 and executed by Juan Pascual de Mena in 1780–84 .

The square forms a backdrop for political protests and Atlético Madrid's victory celebrations . Neptune lost his left arm in 1998 after Real Madrid won the European Cup when a massive police presence could only protect the nearby Plaza de Cibeles . In the meantime the arm has been added again.
