The Plaza de Bolívar is the central square of the Colombian capital Bogotá . In the 16th century built, he was formerly Plaza Mayor called and until 1821 Plaza de la Constitucion . It is located in the heart of the historic La Candelaria district . On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Colombia's independence, Bolívar Square was completely redesigned in 1960. Its area is 13,900 square meters.

The history of the square dates back to the pre-Columbian era as part of the Muisca culture. The first building in the square, a primitive cathedral, was built in 1539, a year after the Colombian capital was founded. During the Spanish colonial era, Bolívar Square was the stage for circus acts, public markets and bullfights, today it is mainly a tourist attraction, but also a place for political demonstrations and all kinds of other popular gatherings.

Buildings

The square is surrounded by historic buildings and houses a statue of Simón Bolívar , which the Italian Pietro Tenerani created in 1846 as the city's first public monument. The Palace of Justice is on the northern edge and the National Capitol of Colombia borders the square on the south. The Cathedral of the Primate of Colombia ( Catedral Primada de Colombia ) and the Palacio Liévano , seat of the Alcaldía ( City Hall, Mayor's Office ) of Bogotá, are on the eastern and western sides.
