National Capitol of Colombia
The Capitolio Nacional de Colombia (German National Capitol of Colombia ) is a historic building on the Plaza de Bolívar in the center of Bogotá . It houses both houses of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia . Its construction began in 1846 on behalf of the Colombian President Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera and was completed in 1926. It was designed by the Danish architect Thomas Reed and upgraded to a national monument in 1975.
The neoclassical building, with Renaissance influences , was built with light-colored stone and has employed several generations of stonemasons . Its front is simple and consists of a series of fluted Ionic columns arranged in three rows of six columns. The central block is determined by the “Elliptical Hall”, the place of the plenary assembly of the Congress. In its courtyards are the busts of the former Presidents of the Republic, General Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera and Rafael Núñez , who wrote the text of the Colombian national anthem .
