history

From the first church building in Bogotá to the cathedral of Colombia

Nave of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

In 1539 a church was built in the city for the first time on behalf of the Spanish conquistador and founder of the city of Bogotá, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada . On August 6, 1538, the first Holy Mass could be celebrated on the construction site. The current church building is the fourth at this point; the first was built between 1538 and 1550; the second from 1569 to 1572 and the third was also demolished in 1806. The Capuchin Br. Domingo de Petres designed the cathedral, which was built between 1807 and 1823. The construction was carried out in the neoclassical style on the central Plaza de Bolívar . With some changes to the original project, the cathedral was consecrated in 1823 and has since been restored several times, most recently in 1998.

architecture

The church consists of the main nave with two aisles ; the vaults of all ships are the same. The facade consists of two bodies, one is Doric order , the other and the towers are Ionic order . The Chapel of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia , one of twelve chapels, is buried in well-known personalities from Colombian history and the city, such as the city founder Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, the forerunner of the country's independence Antonio Nariño and the painter Gregorio Vasquez de Arce y Ceballos . The cathedral was added to the list of National Monuments of Colombia in 1975.
