La Candelaria is the 17th district ( localidad ) of the Colombian capital Bogotá . With an area of 184 hectares and a resident population of around 24,000 people, it is the capital's smallest district. La Candelaria is completely enclosed by the municipality of Santa Fe . Its name comes from the Catholic feast day of Mary Candlemas .
La Candelaria is the historical and cultural center of the city. Cobblestone streets, contemplative squares and brightly painted houses testify to the colonial heritage. La Candelaria is one of the best preserved historic old towns in Latin America.
The district has a rich cultural life. There are numerous libraries, theaters and museums. In addition, many universities and government agencies have their headquarters here. Due to its attractiveness as a bohemian district of Bogotá, La Candelaria is a popular meeting place for intellectual fringe groups with predominantly literary, artistic and musical activity or ambition and has many visitors all year round.
