The Plaza de Toros de Illumbe (also known as Donostia Arena 2016 or San Sebastián Arena 2016 ) is a multi-purpose hall with a closable roof in the Spanish city of Donostia-San Sebastián in the Basque Country Autonomous Community . From 2001 the arena was the home ground of the San Sebastián GBC , who played in the highest Spanish basketball league ACB . The club currently plays in the Polideportivo Municipal José Antonio Gasca with 2500 seats.
history
The city has had up to twelve smaller bullring throughout its history. The first larger, San Martin Arena, was inaugurated on August 16, 1851 and offered 6,000 seats. In 1870, a new wooden amphitheater for 9,000 spectators was built on the same site, which was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1872. It was rebuilt in 1876 and opened as a reconstructed wooden arena, which was destroyed again after a fire in 1882. The last change, now made of iron and masonry, dates from 1888 and had a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
In 1998 the open arena was extensively rebuilt and equipped with a roof structure. The main feature of the multi-purpose arena is the roof, which consists of two retractable steel construction units, each weighing 60 tons. It can be opened for sporting events or closed for concerts and exhibitions. It has a capacity for around 10,000 to 16,000 seats, depending on the type of event.
The bullring was renamed in late 2009. The arena's board of directors approved the new name due to San Sebastián's candidacy for the “Capitalidad Cultural 2016” . The Basque name of the arena is now Donostia Arena 2016 or San Sebastián Arena 2016 (Spanish version).
“At the end of August 2012, the mayor of San Sebastián announced [...] that the expiring lease with a bullfighting organizer would no longer be extended. In addition, in times of economic crisis, taxpayers cannot be expected to maintain an arena in which bullfights only take place seven days a year. The city administration shares 100 percent of the arguments of the bullfighting opponents, Izagirre said after media reports, 'The suffering and death of an animal must not be turned into a public spectacle'. With this, the Basque party Bildu is following the concerns of the bullfighting opponents, because bullfighting has been prohibited by law in Catalonia in northeastern Spain since the beginning of 2012 and in the Canary Islands since the beginning of the 90s. According to the mayor, the facility is now to be used increasingly for sporting purposes. "
In 2015, the Basque nationalist party PNV under Eneko Goia took over the office of mayor and reopened the arena for bullfighting.
