Pleistarchus (King)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pleistarchus ( Greek Πλείσταρχος; † 458 BC ), the son of Leonidas I and the Gorgon was an ancient Spartan king from the house of the Agiads .

As of 480 BC His father died in the battle of Thermopylae in battle with the Persians , he was still a child. Therefore, his uncle Cleombrotos took over the reign first. As Cleombrotos died a short time later, his cousin Pausanias became his guardian. This also led the Spartans to the Battle of Plataiai . It is not exactly known when Pleistarchus came to rule. It is assumed that this will happen at the latest with the death of Pausanias in 467 BC. Happened, but probably already around 477 BC. It must be 458 BC. He may have died without male descendants since that year Pausanias' son Pleistoanax became king.
