The Plott Hound is a non- FCI recognized dog breed from the USA. The breed is recognized by the AKC and is the official state dog of the US state of North Carolina .

Origin and history

Plott Hounds are descendants of German hunting dogs that the Plott family brought from Germany to North Carolina in the 1750s .

An article by John Jackson in the American Plott Association's 1996 yearbook shows that this development is a "fairly pure bred " breed compared to other American hunting dogs . The Plott family had tried for decades to breed their breeding lines as pure as possible.

It is used for hunting bears , puma , feral domestic pigs (hogs) and raccoons in the Appalachian Mountains and other mountainous regions. Outside of the US , it is relatively unknown. Due to its robustness, however, the Plott Hound is enjoying increasing popularity among European hunters for wild boar hunting.

In Germany, until 2010, the organized breeding activities were looked after by the Association for Black Forest Welding Dogs and Plotts Hounds . In 2010 the newly founded association Plotthound Germany took over the representation of the breed in Germany.
