Podington Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Podington Castle sometimes, Puddington Manor Farm called, is an Outbound castle in the town of Podington in the English county of Bedfordshire .

The Motte, with three courtyards surrounded by a moat , was built in the 11th century and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as owned by Hugh de Fleming . Before the beginning of the 17th century, when a new Podington Manor House (now the Old Podington Manor House ) was built directly in front of the castle, it was already in ruins . Podington Manor House became a working farm in 1694 after its owners had a new residence built elsewhere.

Extensive earthworks are still preserved from the old castle. They are on the old mound in the fields behind the Old Podington Manor House . Foundations were also found in the 20th century.
