Rocks on the edge of the valley

Podtrosecká údolí is a valley system in the north of the Czech Republic . It is located in the Bohemian Paradise , about 5 kilometers north of the town of Sobotka , and surrounds the hill of Trosky Castle in the shape of a sickle . The 143.04 hectare area has been protected as a nature reserve since 1999 because of its valuable wetlands .

The reserve includes the valleys of the three rivers Jordánka, Žehrovka and Želejovický potok as well as some smaller adjoining gorges. The watercourses in the lowlands were dammed into ponds in the 16th century . Eight ponds have been preserved: Věžák, Nebák, Vidlák, Krčák, Hrůdka, Rokytnický, Dolský and Podsemín. The water areas are bordered by wet meadows and moors . At the edges of the valleys are steep, high limestone cliffs , which only offer a passage in a few places. Particularly valuable plant species in the wetlands are the marsh glossy herb , a species of orchid, the skin fern Trichomanes speciosum and the deciduous moss Hamatocaulis vernicosus , which forms a large colony here on 1000 m². The little horseshoe bat lives in the rocks .

The development of the valleys is limited to a few holiday home colonies and the former Podsemín mill . The ponds are used as bathing lakes. The reserve is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists on an 8-kilometer educational trail.
