Michael Philipp Beuther (born May 21, 1564 in Oppenheim ; † July 30, 1616 in Zweibrücken ) was a Reformed theologian and general superintendent of the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken .

Life

Born the eldest son of the Strasbourg scholar and professor of history, Michael Beuther , Michael Philipp Beuther enrolled at the Strasbourg Academy on April 17, 1578 at the age of 13 . In 1580 he was admitted to the public examination and received his master's degree at the age of sixteen. The register of the University of Wittenberg lists him as a master's degree in 1584. In 1586 he moved to the University of Rostock , where he received the Gradum licentiatorum theologiae in 1587 .

In 1587 he returned to Strasbourg and took his first job as a public preacher , i.e. as a parish assistant. His father died in the same year. He therefore had to take care of his mother and his two younger brothers, Johann Michael Beuther and Jakob Ludwig Beuther . In 1589 he resigned from the service of the church in Strasbourg, because he refused a commitment to the Lutheran Book of Concord .

In the same year he entered the church service with Duke Johann I von Zweibrücken. At first he held the position of deacon and thus the assistant to the general superintendent in the administration of the ecclesiastical affairs of the country. In 1590 he married Margaretha Jung, daughter of the bailiff of Diemeringen Reinhard Jung. Soon he was exercising the office of court preacher alongside his diaconate and, as church secretary, was increasingly involved in the tasks of external church administration. In 1601 he was at the University of Basel for Doctor of theology doctorate. In 1603, Beuther was the librarian of the court library.

In 1607 Michael Philipp Beuther succeeded the late Pantaleon Candidus as general superintendent of the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken. He held the office until his death. He was buried in the chapel of the Alexander Church.

Act as general superintendent

Michael Philipp Beuther completed the so-called second Zweibrücken Reformation in the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken, the transition from Lutheran to Reformed teaching. A special church visit was carried out in 1609 . As part of this visitation, all pastors had to make a written commitment to Reformed teaching. By moving the days of prayer to Wednesday, Beuther regained more respect, whereby gates and shops had to be kept closed, as on Sundays. The rite of Holy Communion was similar to that of the other Reformed countries. Under Beuther, the pastoral care was fundamentally reorganized through renovation of the parish properties and inclines.
