A point-of-service system , often also abbreviated as POS system , is a software or hardware system that supports the entire ordering and billing process in service companies. POS systems are mainly used in gastronomy .

meaning

The difference between point-of-service and point-of-sale cannot be clearly demarcated. In addition, both terms are usually abbreviated to POS. While point-of-sales mainly refers to the sales process, point-of-service comprises the entire process from ordering and processing the order to billing (receipt). The cash register systems available on the market can usually be upgraded to full-fledged point-of-service systems with optional additional components.

Functions of a point-of-service system:

- Ordering process: At a statically installed terminal or via handhelds via wireless communication to the POS server
- Support of customer-specific work processes that do not directly serve the sales process (e.g. table reservation)
- Support of the internal processing of the order: via the printing of work receipts or the paperless processing via terminals
- Receipts: printing receipts, administration of the cash balance - in some cases also processing of cashless payments
- Functions for the implementation of the GDPdU : Export of sales data for evaluation by tax consultants or auditors. The data is often exported via the DATEV interface or the standard csv and xml formats.

costs

The software is usually offered as a subscription (license rental) or as a single-user license. Depending on the provider, the licenses are graded according to the size of the restaurant (number of tables) and the modules that can be used. All known commercial providers offer a round-the-clock hotline, save the data in a cloud and take care of data backup and recovery in the event of an error. These support services are often an integral part of the license agreement and are not charged separately.

The hardware can also usually be ordered from the provider. Some POS programs are not tied to a specified hardware from the provider. Some providers offer a free version of their POS software, which, however, intentionally does not cover all use cases and does not meet the legal requirements (e.g. GDPdU , GoBS ) due to the lack of a data export interface . OrderSprinter can be used as the only completely free alternative (available under the Creative Commons license BY-NC-ND) for the German market .
