Polar Electro Oy is a Finnish company based in Kempele near the city of Oulu . The company was founded in 1977 and is one of the leading manufacturers of wireless heart rate monitors and accessories. The company is known today mainly for sports watches with heart rate measurement.

In 2003 the company achieved a turnover of 140 million euros (2015 in Germany € 35.58 million). Worldwide there are 1,200 employees in 26 subsidiaries, and over 80 countries are supplied via the sales network.

Company history

The company was founded in 1977 by Seppo Säynäjäkangas , who was working on a device for measuring heart rate at the University of Oulu .

He was inspired by a conversation with a trainer during a cross-country ski run in 1976. It was about the need to develop a measuring device that can not only be used for stationary training but also be worn on the body. Because the heart rate was still measured on the finger at that time, there was no freedom of movement due to the wiring. In addition, the measurements were quite slow and inaccurate. After intensive research and development, the world's first wireless heart rate monitor, the Sport Tester PE2000, came onto the market in 1982 . Since then, the functionality has been continuously improved. and broadened the product range.

Polar Electro Oy decided in 1992 to build a new headquarters in Kempele as a location. The main reason for this decision was the proximity to the city of Oulu and its research and development opportunities.

Products

Polar today manufactures products for the end consumer as well as in the B2B area. These include watches with heart rate displays ( A300 , M200 , M430 , M600 and V800 ), combined devices for cyclists ( M460 and V650 ), for fitness studios and devices for horse training as well as matching sensors ( H10 , OH1 and Bluetooth Smart ) and accessories (interchangeable wristbands , Charging cable and bike mounts). Fitness trackers ( A370 , Loop 2 and Loop Crystal ) and scales ( Balance ) are also produced under the label "Lifestyle" . The web application Flow and the mobile app Beat ( Google Play Store and App Store (iOS) ) are used for training evaluation, data transfer and sharing on social media .

The models S625 , RS800 , RCX5 , M400 and Loop , among others, are no longer produced .
