Poles, Hungarians, two little brothers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pole, Hungarian, two little brothers are the opening words of a historical proverb that has existed in both the Hungarian and Polish languages since the Middle Ages and expresses a deep friendship between the two peoples, which continues to this day.

The "Polish-Hungarian Madonna" by János Németh, a ceramic relief on the wall in the market square in Krosno (2014).

Polish is the saying:

Polak, Węgier - dwa bratanki,
i do szabli, i do szklanki,
oba zuchy, oba żwawi,
never in the Pan Bóg błogosławi.

Loosely translated into German: "May Poles and Hungarians be cousins, good at fighting, good at partying, both brave, both lively, be God's blessing on them."

In Hungarian it is:

Lengyel, magyar - két jó barát,
együtt harcol s issza borát.

Basically: "Poles and Hungarians - two good friends, they fight together and drink their wine."

Day of the Polish-Hungarian Friendship

On March 12, 2007, the Hungarian Parliament passed a law that defines March 23 as “the day of Polish-Hungarian friendship” . The bill was accepted by 324 MPs with no votes against or abstentions. The Polish Sejm passed a similar resolution on March 16 of the same year. The reasoning explicitly refers to the “unprecedented” character of friendship.
