United Nations Political Bureau for Somalia

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia ( United Nations Political Office for Somalia , UNPOS ), based in Nairobi , Kenya , was on 15 April 1995 by the Secretary General of the United Nations established to - after the failure of peace missions UNOSOM I and UNOSOM II - to promote peace and reconciliation in Somalia through contacts with Somali leaders, civil society, states and organizations .

The UNPOS reports to the Department for Political Affairs of the UN Secretariat . Its head is Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah , the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Somalia. The Office has sponsored various initiatives for peace in Somalia, such as the Peace Conferences in Arta, Djibouti in 2000 and in Nairobi under the auspices of IGAD 2002–2004, which led to the formation of the Somali Transitional Government . It is also authorized to mediate between the conflicting parties and on the Somaliland issue.
